Mutual Defence Alliances

In the Cold War, both sides created alliances to cement their ties.  This ensured that if one country was attacked, all of the allies on that side would unite behind them.

NATO:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO was created in 1949 as a result of the Soviet Union’s atomic bomb.  The United States were trying to stop any movement into Europe, and this was a military alliance to do just that.

The Warsaw Pact:

Created six years after NATO, the Warsaw Pact was the military alliance of the Soviet Union and its allies.
