DREO

In the Department of National Defence, there were six Defence Research Establishments of the Chief of Research and Development, located at Dartmouth Nova Scotia, Valcartier Quebec, Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario, Suffield, Alberta, and Victoria, British Columbia.

The Defence Research Establishment Ottawa, or DREO was situated at Shirleys Bay and employed about two hundred people with technical and scientific backgrounds, as well as support staff.

Their research was invaluable to the Department of National Defence and military commands  They had six focuses: radar, communications, space, protective sciences, electronics, and electronic warfare.

Their research into electronic warfare revolved around how to find, detect and identify radar and communications systems as well as how to interfere with other signals and counter other Electronic-Counter Measures (ECM).

Beyond ECM, their research had implications for radar as they looked into ground, air, and space radars.
