Cold War Radar

Early Warning Satellite System

The United States also had an AN/FPS-85 phased array radar at Elgin AFB, Florida.  The principle behind this type of radar was advanced, using electronic switching.  It therefore could follow many objects simultaneously, even ballistic missiles.

This was used alongside an F-S-49 radar in New Jersey and seven FSS-7 height finders.  Together, they could detect, SLBMs (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles).
